Forest and land fires in Mount Lawu are spreading. Personnel from various parties have been deployed to assist in extinguishing the fires and mapping the coordinates of the fires. The Forestry Education and Training Center (UPT PPK UNS) also played a role in the forest and land fire operation on Mount Lawu. UPT PPK UNS received information on Saturday (30/9/2023) night, then coordinated with the Forestry Extension Officer of Region X Surakarta to prepare and deploy the Singo Serang MPA elements to assist in the Mount Lawu Karhutla operation on Sunday, 1/10/23. UPT PPK UNS had two teams involved: the Search and Rescue Unit (SRU) composed of UPT PPK UNS security personnel and Singo Serang MPA volunteers, and the fire mapping team composed of UPT PPK UNS staff working together with Region X Surakarta CDK.

On Monday (2/10/2023), the Head of UPT PPK UNS went to the Candi Cetho Post to coordinate with the Independent Cetho Base Camp to assess what UPT PPK UNS could provide assistance with. Based on the evaluation results on Tuesday (3/10/2023), mapping was needed to determine the coordinates of fire movement used as a consideration for water bombing. From Wednesday (3/10/2023) until today, the UPT PPK UNS team has been assisting in mapping the movement points of the fire. "As the manager of the forest area, we feel what is happening with Karhutla in Mount Lawu, so we are trying to help as much as we can with the hope that the Karhutla disaster can be quickly managed. However, seriousness and coordination between agencies are the key factors in this operation," said Dwi Priyo Ariyanto, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D., the Head of UPT PPK UNS.

Every day, the mapping team continuously maps the development of fire points based on information obtained from the SRU team in the field. The results of mapping the development of fire points will be used as an evaluation for the Mount Lawu Karhutla operation team and for follow-up fire extinguishing operations coordinated with the Karanganyar Regency BPBD and the Karanganyar Regency Government. On Friday afternoon (6/10/2023), water bombing was carried out based on the coordinates analyzed by the UPT PPK UNS mapping team in collaboration with Region X Surakarta CDK and the Candi Cetho base camp. The UPT PPK UNS team will continue to be involved in handling Karhutla in Mount Lawu with the hope that the fire can be extinguished promptly and does not spread.
